Notice about Prevalence of Illnesses There is an increase in reports of sickness among children in Maine, causing concern for many families. The Maine CDC has issued a health alert regarding “elevated respiratory disease incidence caused by multiple viruses occurring especially among children and placing strain on healthcare systems.” The below illnesses have started showing up in many of our schools. COVID-19 -- individuals should consider home testing, isolate for at least 5 days with a positive test, and may return on day 6. Masking is required during days 6-10. Influenza -- is a viral illness characterized by a fever with a cough and/or sore throat. Individuals should stay home until 24 hours after fever resolves without the use of fever-reducing medications and symptom improvement Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection (RSV) -- RSV is a common respiratory virus that can include fever, coughing, sneezing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose and wheezing. Individuals with RSV are usually contagious for 3 to 8 days. Most RSV infections go away on their own in a week or two. Students may return to school once they are either cleared by their physician or have been fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications and symptoms are improving. Colds – there is no standardized recommendation for returning during/after a cold, Colds generally last 4-7 days. Individuals with colds can return when they are fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications and symptoms are improving. Pertussis – (whooping cough) is a bacterial infection and is treated with antibiotics. individuals should stay home until they have completed 5 days of antibiotics. Seek medical attention when symptoms warrant professional attention. If your child has an uncontrolled cough, difficulty breathing, or persistent fever, you should consider a medical evaluation. There are ways we can encourage our children to navigate this time that will help them remain healthy, happy and ready to learn. Washing hands will help contain the spread of germs! Cleaning surfaces used by many hands like desks, door knobs etc. Vaccinations are available for some of these illnesses, check them out! Most importantly, please stay home if you are sick!
